When Louis-Ulysse Chopard established his brand in 1860 in Sonvilier, Switzerland, he was competing against eighty other watchmakers in a town that was already famous for the craft. It’s even rumored that the company was little more than a mailbox address at its outset. Under three decades later, he was counting Tsar Nicholas II and other figures of royalty among his clientele. But it was Karl Scheufele III whose purchase and stewardship of the company would bring about some of the brand’s most unique creations.
This incredibly rare Chopard gold watch from the Scheufele era exemplifies some of the funkiest, most eccentric haute couture the 1970s had to offer. The company had a mild, short-lived obsession with combining gold with tiger’s eye, allowing this timepiece a sort of glamorous reflection of ‘70s wood panel kitsch. The 18 karat gold chain that serves as the bracelet cleverly incorporates the case into its center link and dangles care-free around the wrist for a look that pairs perfectly with a luxurious kaftan and a stroll through the streets of Chelsea or Soho.
While it would be easy to imagine this chopard women's watch on many a wrist at a famed discotheque such as Le Clique or Studio 54 during the years of the Carter administration, very few remain in circulation today. Equal parts high fashion and statement bangle and hidden treasure, this exceptional example of Chopard’s vanguard status is a statement timepiece for those with eclectically exquisite taste.
